Getting There

Long day!

Woke at 2:15 - after an hour and a half of sleep -and set off for Philly airport with Sara and Sean.  After quick goodbyes, the kids drove off in the Mini and the solo adventure began.

I wasn't alone for long.  Met a woman at Delta check-in who was traveling to Alabama to see her grandson.  We were on the same first flight to Atlanta.  Sandy and I spent a couple of hours together, she was really encouraging about my trip.  We parted in the Atlanta airport with a big hug, the promise to become FB friends and her telling me she 'has a really good feeling' about my upcoming adventure.

My Atlanta to Belize City  flight was switched to a different plane - at the other end of the airport.  I crammed in to the train car with everyone else to get to the new terminal.  Next to me was a group of black guys who seemed to be having a good time.  One in particular, who I couldn't see because of the woman in front of me, was very funny and had half the train laughing.  I leaned around the woman to see what he looked like, and the first thing I saw was a big clock on a chain around his neck.  No way!  I whispered to the middle-aged white woman who blocked my view, "Is that Flava Flav?", but she didn't seem to know what I was talking about.  (heh - I'm middle-aged, I know Flava!)    Soon, yells of 'Flava FLAAAAV'  were trailing through the terminal.  Wish I got a picture!

I'm trying really hard to be brave and talk to people!  LOL  While waiting for boarding I met a cardiologist from North Carolina who is traveling to Belize to donate a cardiac cath lab and on the plane I sat next to a young woman who has been to a certain Sloth Sanctuary (Erin!!) in Costa Rica.  We talked a lot about traveling - she's been all over Central America and made a lot of recommendations for me.

Landing in Belize City, I was hoping to get something to eat, but Tropic Air moved me up to the next flight so I had to rush to the gate to make my (little) plane flight for Placencia.

This is the baggage claim area at Placencia Airport.  :)

Got a taxi to my new home at The Secret Garden, bought some groceries, unpacked, found the nicest note stuck in my suitcase by my kids (ok...I cried a bit at that!), relaxed in my new home away from home and wondered 'what on earth have I done!'  LOL

DAY 1: Blessed by Sandy, sighted Flava Flav, inspired by Dr. Mike and Maria who has seen sloth, survived three flights (even the little plane!), tired, hungry and on my own in Central America!!

Pretty good day.
